# Prometheus

> Query metrics and alerting rules from any PromQL-compatible endpoint.

Go to **Connections**, click **Connect** next to Prometheus, and enter the URL of your Prometheus server. Authenticate with basic auth or a custom header, for example `Authorization: Bearer <token>`.

## Permissions

The credentials need read access to the PromQL query, alerts and rules APIs.

### Metrics and alerts

Run PromQL queries and read active alerts and rules.

| `PromQL query API` | Metric queries and labels |
| `alerts and rules API` | Active and pending alerts |

* On Grafana Cloud, the access policy token needs the `metrics:read` scope.
