# Keeping monitors tuned

> Monitors rot when nothing owns the upkeep. Ordyn owns it.

Anything set up two years ago and never touched is probably noise now. Ordyn keeps its monitors honest in a few ways.

## Re-verified on every deploy

Each deploy re-checks the monitors Ordyn created for the code involved. If a change makes a monitor redundant or wrong, Ordyn revises or folds it. If a previously requested piece of instrumentation has since landed, Ordyn creates the monitor it was waiting on.

## Consolidated, not sprawling

Ordyn combines monitors across pull requests when they watch the same thing. It also rejects a new monitor that duplicates existing coverage in the same channel. Monitor count is not the goal. What surfaces is.

## Noise feeds back into the monitor

When triage repeatedly holds a monitor's alerts because they do not show real impact, that is a signal the monitor is too sensitive or no longer relevant. Ordyn reviews suppressed and posted alerts every few hours, groups them into [open issues](/open-issues/overview), and flags monitors that are firing without cause.

## Ask for changes in Slack

You do not need a settings page to tune a monitor. Reply in the alert's thread and mention Ordyn:

* "Raise the threshold to 5% and only check business hours."
* "Repeat less often." or "Always tell me about these."
* "This is expected during our nightly batch."
* "Don't page me about this again."
* "Pause this monitor." or "Send these to #payments-alerts instead."

Ordyn makes the change, verifies it took effect, and confirms in the thread. See [Working with Ordyn in Slack](/slack/overview).

## What Ordyn will not touch

Ordyn creates and maintains its own monitors. It does not change monitors it did not create unless you ask it to. Monitors it creates live in your provider, where you can see and edit them like any other.
